Description
• Attends Fire Academy and EMS classes and other formal training programs established to qualify the incumbent for State certification as a Firefighter/EMT. 
• Trains and participates in the operation of two-way radios, and other communications equipment used in receiving and transmitting messages. 
• Participates in fire drills and attends training classes in firefighting and EMS; participates in pre-fire surveys of industrial and other business buildings, hospitals, nursing homes, schools and multi-family dwellings.
 • Learns how to perform general maintenance, cleaning, and upkeep of department apparatus, equipment, furnishings and structures. 
• Will assist and participate in the response to fire alarms or other emergencies as assigned.
 • Will learn how to don personal protective equipment, work in enclosed areas, lay and connect hoses, hold nozzles which direct water streams, raise and climb ladders, use fire extinguishers, prying tools, ropes, and other fire and medical equipment.
 • Performs related work as assigned.
Educational Aspect

The Tenmile Rural Fire District Fire Cadet Program offers young men and women an opportunity to explore a career in the fire service. The Cadet Program involves many hands-on and team oriented learning activities while training along side career firefighters. Each Cadet will learn mental and physical wellness, a sense of self-responsibility, personal growth, leadership, teamwork and firefighting skills. Completion of the Program and continued volunteer hours opens an oppurtunity to apply for out student program to pursue a degree in Fire Science or Paramedicine at Umpqua Community College.

With a mixture of hands-on training and classroom instruction, Tenmile Rural Fire District Fire Cadets are instructed in the basics of Firefighting, Emergency Medical, Rescue, and Hazardous Materials Awareness by experienced firefighter mentors. The main goal of our program is to create opportunities for young adults to assist as interns and gain valuable knowledge in preparation for future fire service employment.

 

Further Requirements
  • Be between the ages of 16-20 years old (ages outside of this will be considered on a case-by-case basis)
  • Possess a Valid Oregon Drivers License.
  • Be in good physical condition (must pass the Cadet physical ability test)
  • Meet required attendance expectations
  • Be enrolled in or a graduate of a high school or GED program
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Have a strong desire to pursue a career as a firefighter
Lift Requirements

Tenmile Rural Fire District Fire Cadets can expect to lift 30-50 pounds on a regular basis during training.
